The City of Coral Springs is proud to announce it has earned gold-level certification under the Florida Green Building Coalition’s Florida Green Local Government (FGBC) designation program.
While the City previously earned silver-level certification in 2012, the designation was due for recertification last year. Senior Planner, Christina Fermin, from the Development Services Division was tasked with coordinating recertification – her passion for sustainability and previous experience in green planning made her an obvious choice to earn the City its new gold-standard.
By setting forth best practices across all areas of government, including water use, air quality, tree canopy, land use, waste disposal and recycling, they were certainly on track for silver-level certification. However, the City added additional green features to improve its ranking. These updated green features included informative water billing, which enabled customers to track and analyze water usage, updated maps of green facilities and amenities, and painted City roofs white to reflect the sun’s rays, which cuts a building’s cooling costs and reduces the heat island effect.
Of the designation, Director Susan Krisman says, “One of the most important responsibilities of the Development Services Division is to ensure Coral Springs remains a sustainable, environmentally-friendly community – this includes our own buildings, parks and facilities. We are proud to receive gold-level certification and will continue to improve upon best practices as it relates to environmental conservation from within.”
The City of Coral Springs is one of only three cities in Broward County to earn gold-level certification – along with Coconut Creek and Fort Lauderdale. This achievement demonstrates our commitment to protect and conserve the community’s natural resources and enhance the efficiency of government, which also reduces the burden on taxpayers. More importantly, being a green City raises public awareness about the benefits of environmental stewardship.
The gold-level certification from FGBC was presented by Mayor Skip Campbell to the Development Services Division during the City of Coral Springs Commission Meeting held Wednesday, August 15, 2018, by C.J. Davila, Executive Director for FGBC.
