Southwest Florida’s Babcock Ranch, with sustainability designed into the entire fabric of the community, has been certified a Platinum “Florida Green” community by FGBC.
Babcock Ranch’s key design and development strategies support this initiative and FGBC standards including solar energy, water efficiency, native plants and materials, sustainable local materials, tree preservation and relocation. The town has the one of the state’s largest photovoltaic solar energy generation fields, with 343,000 panels laid out along 350 acres, equaling 200 football fields.

Building Green with Sustainable Profits 1 – 2 p.m. at Babcock Ranch

This course will present the building science of integrated whole-house systems along with five key elements that represent green building construction practices. Focus will be on fitting green building practices into affordable housing utilizing quality construction methods along with readily available materials. Field examples of basic as well as advanced green building strategies will be critiqued – what worked and what hasn’t over the past twenty-five years. How various building components interact with each other to effect health, building maintenance, water conservation, and energy efficiency will also be addressed.
